2D that isn't template motion
Most explainer video looks the same because most of it is assembled from stock character rigs and preset transitions. The alternative costs more time and is immediately visible: illustrate the assets, then animate them with actual timing decisions.
What I make
Explainers
My Explainer piece is built entirely from custom-illustrated assets — artwork drawn in Photoshop and Illustrator, animated frame-considered in After Effects, with tight typography and transitions that carry meaning rather than filling time. Product and software explainers are where I've spent most of my non-broadcast years, working with technology companies including Securiti AI, Data Science Dojo and Ignite Labs.
Collage and cut-out promos
The Paper-Collage Promo mixes live action with crumpled-paper texture, halftone shapes and retro props. Khair is a bold CMYK collage — a figure walking a rainbow road with a vintage mic and cloud cut-outs, blending Blender 3D elements into punchy 2D compositing. Collage is a good answer when a brief needs energy and personality but has no budget for a shoot.
Silhouette and character-led motion
The Andi Soual identity is silhouette animation carrying an entire show's personality — posture and gesture doing the work that faces usually do.
What makes 2D read
- Weight. Objects need mass. Everything that moves should feel like it costs something to move.
- Anticipation and overshoot, used sparingly. Applied to everything, it turns into rubber. Applied to the one element the eye is following, it reads as craft.
- Transitions that mean something. A shape that becomes the next scene's subject is worth ten wipes.
- Typography as an animated object. Type has a reading time. It enters when it can be read and leaves after, not on the music.
Social-first formats
Nearly everything now needs a 9:16 and a 1:1 version. I design for the crop from the beginning rather than reframing at the end — safe areas planned, type scaled for a phone, and the first frame doing enough work to stop a scroll.
Let’s make something move.
