Bil Tawfiq — a gold calligraphy ident

Gold Arabic lettering, glass rings and floating particulate. Restrained on purpose — the entire piece is designed and composited in After Effects, with no 3D render in the pipeline.

Premium is restraint

The default instinct with gold is to add: more shine, more sparkle, more bloom. It reads cheap almost immediately. What makes gold read as expensive is the opposite — a narrow specular range, slow movement, and long stretches where nothing happens.

Most of the design work on this piece was deciding what to leave out. The particles are sparse. The glass rings move once. The lettering is given time to be looked at.

Calligraphy as artwork, not a font

The lettering was drawn and refined in Illustrator, with texture and shading passes in Photoshop, before any animation. That order matters: Arabic calligraphy has stroke weight relationships and joins that are decisions, not defaults, and they have to be resolved as artwork before motion is applied to them. Animating a typed Arabic lockup and calling it calligraphy is the most common shortcut in this market, and it always shows.

Built entirely in After Effects

No 3D render. The glass rings, refraction and depth are achieved with layered 2D elements, blurs and displacement rather than geometry. On a piece this restrained that is faster and, more usefully, infinitely amendable — a note on the gold tone is a slider, not a re-render.
