Product film is a lighting job
Product animation gets discussed as modelling work and it is mostly not. The model needs to be accurate, but accuracy is table stakes. What makes a product shot look expensive is lighting: the shape of the highlight travelling across a bezel, the fall-off on a curved surface, the single specular that tells you a material is glass and not plastic.
This piece is built around a small number of large, soft sources and one hard rim, moved slowly relative to the camera so the surfaces do the animating.
Macro texture as the subject
Most of the frame time is spent very close to the object. At that distance the strap weave, the micro-scratches on the case and the anisotropic sheen on the crown are the content. Those are shading problems, not modelling problems — the geometry underneath is simpler than the render suggests.
Grading in After Effects pushed the whole piece toward a cool green-tinted range, which separates the metal from the cloth without needing more light.
Decisions worth naming
- Slow, continuous camera. Product cuts read as advertising. A single move reads as a look.
- Darkness kept. Large parts of the frame are left unlit. Filling shadow is the fastest way to make a premium object look like a catalogue photograph.
- Reveal held back. The full object appears late. Everything before it is material.
Why self-initiated work matters
Broadcast schedules do not leave room to sit on a single shot until the lighting is right. Personal projects are where that gets practised, and the practice comes back into the paid work. Related: 3D motion graphics and animation.
